Listen to the Cry of the Earth
and the Cry of the Poor
The Diocese of Worcester will be celebrating the Season of Creation and the Feast of St. Francis with a special Mass for Creation on Friday, October 1st at 6:30pm. Bishop McManus will be celebrating the Mass for Creation.
As stewards of God’s creation, we are reminded of the need to respect the Earth's resources. Our care of the environment impacts the well-being of all humanity, in particular the poor and marginalized in society.
We pray together, for one another as a human family, that our care of the Earth’s resources will bring healing to the damage we caused to God’s creation and nourish all people now and always.

“When you plant this with care, watch how God's love for you will grow right before your eyes.”
Gail Hickey, Diocese of Worcester Environmental Stewardship Ministry Team Member
Best time to plant is now, in the Fall!
1. Pick a spot: Your tree seedling needs a place where it gets sunlight and has space to grow: Backyard, Public or Private forests.
2. Watch the roots: The roots must go straight down into the ground. If you can’t dig that deep you can trim the roots. The roots below ground should be longer than the height of the seedling above ground.
3. Dig a hole: Plant the seedling using a shovel or a planting bar. Make sure the hole is deep enough for the roots to fit straight down without bending.
4. Cover the roots: For the seedling to grow, soil must touch all the roots. After the hole is filled, lightly stomp the soil.
5. Give it water: Seedlings need water to live, just like we do.
6. Mulch: A light layer of mulch, such as wood chips, around the seedling helps keep water at the seedling’s roots.
Watch it grow!

The Environmental Stewardship team enthusiastically invites everyone in the diocese to join us and the Bishop for a festive celebration of our commitment to protecting God's Creation. The Mass will involve children of all ages including an offertory of wonderful artwork that has been created by young people from across the diocese. If your child would like to participate they can bring a drawing, written thought, or both on a 4X6 index card, with the contributor’s first name, age, and parish/school, sharing their vision/thoughts regarding the prayer: “That God protect the Earth, our common home.” |
